Set Up a Moodle Grade Book

Your Moodle Grade Book is a informational tool to give numerical feedback to your students throughout the life of your course. It is important to set it up before the beginning of the semester for clarity. Your Grade Book should properly reflect your syllabus. Adding Categories (Video: Category Setup)

From the Moodle Course Page

  1. Select ‘Grades’ in the Administration block
  2. Select ‘Setup’
  3. Categories and Items
  4. Your aggregation method should be ‘Natural’.
  5. At the bottom of the screen, Select ‘Add Category'
  6. Give it a name in ‘Category name’ and click ‘Save Changes’
  7. Once all Categories have been added, you’ll need to assign a value to each category. To do this, click the small box on the left of the ‘weights’ box.
  8. Add numbers in each category totaling 100.
  9. Click ‘Save Changes’


Adding a Grade Item (Video: Adding a Grade Item)

From the Moodle Course Page

  1. Select ‘Grades’ in the Administration block
  2. Select ‘Setup’
  3. Select ‘Categories and Items’
  4. At this point, your Grade Book should have complete Categories.
  5. At the bottom of the screen, Select ‘Add Grade Item’
  6. Fill in the ‘Item Name’
  7. Add a value in the ‘Maximum Grade’ slot.
  8. In the Parent Category, choose a ‘Grade Category’ by clicking on the drop down tab. * If you forget to do this, watch ‘Arranging Grade Items and Activities’
  9. Click ‘Save Changes’


Arranging Graded Items and Activities (Video: Arranging Grade Items)

From the Moodle Course Page:

  1. Select ‘Grades’ in the Administration block
  2. Select ‘Setup’
  3. Select ‘Categories and Items’
  4. At this point, your Grade Book should have complete Categories, some Grade Items and/or Activities.

To move multiple items to the same category:

  1. Click the small box on the far right of each row under the ‘Select’ column for each item to be moved.
  2. Scroll down to ‘Move selected items to’.
  3. Select the drop down list and click the desired category.
  4. The page will refresh automatically.

To move one item:

  1. On the far left of the row, click the link icon for the desired item.
  2. Review the available setup to determine where you want the item to reside.
  3. Click on the empty box that represents your desired location.
  4. The page will refresh automatically.
